I finally caved and paid for a full roof inspection after the last hail storm

It cost me $450 for a company called High Desert Roofing to come out and give me a full report. They found some cracked tiles and a small leak near the vent pipe that I never would have seen. My insurance is covering most of the repair, but I'm still out that inspection fee. Has anyone else had a good experience with a different inspector in the Northeast Heights that might be a bit cheaper?

Honestly, that inspection fee is probably baked into the final repair quote anyway. I mean, they find the damage and then get the job to fix it, right? It feels like you're paying for the estimate more than a truly independent look.

You mentioned "paying for the estimate," and it reminded me of the time I took my old station wagon to a chain shop for a state inspection. The guy came out holding a piece of paper, all serious, and said my brake lines were "dangerously corroded." I asked to see them, and he led me to the bay. He pointed at a spot that looked fine to me, just a little dusty. I drove it straight to my regular mechanic, who laughed and said they were in perfect shape, just needed a wash. That shop sure made a hundred bucks off me for nothing more than an opinion.

Ugh, @king.lisa, you nailed it. It's the oldest trick. They charge you $100 for the "inspection," then magically find exactly $2,000 worth of "critical" work only they can do. That fee isn't for looking at your car, it's a down payment on the repair they decided you needed before they even showed up. Paying for an estimate that just funnels you right back to them is a total scam.
