Changing my mind about those big gravel yards after seeing a neighbor's setup in the North Valley

I always thought those full gravel yards were just a cheap, ugly way to avoid watering, but my neighbor on Guadalupe Trail showed me how she used specific river rocks and native plants in pockets, which actually looks really good and cut her water bill by about $80 a month, so what other low-water ideas have actually worked for you guys?

Honestly, that's a really good point about the gravel yards. I used to think the same thing, that they just looked like a parking lot. But it's all about how you do it, right? My big question is about the maintenance over time. Doesn't all that gravel just fill up with weeds and leaves after a couple seasons? What does your neighbor actually do to keep it clean and looking good without it becoming a huge chore?

My neighbor on Lomas went full gravel and spent last Saturday with a leaf blower, basically dusting his own yard like a weird museum exhibit. He says it's a "meditative practice," but I saw the look on his face. Isn't that just trading a lawnmower for a different, louder machine?
