Am I the only one who thinks xeriscaping the front yard was smarter than keeping bluegrass?
I know this goes against what half the block thinks, but I ripped out my front lawn two summers ago and put in gravel and native plants, and I'd do it again tomorrow. My neighbor on the next street kept his bluegrass and spent about $140 a month watering it through July and August, plus he was out there every weekend fighting it. I did the math on my own water bill and mine dropped by around $60 a month, and the only thing I do now is pull a few weeds in April. People keep saying the native stuff looks dead and brown, but mine has sand sage and blanket flower and it's green from spring through fall with zero extra water. What got me was the first August after the switch, when I watched him out there with a hose at 6am and I was drinking coffee on the porch. If you've done a partial xero conversion instead of the whole yard, how did you handle the strip by the sidewalk where everybody can see it?
