The hot water tank went kaput last Tuesday and I was scrambling

Came home after my mail route and found a puddle in the basement. The tank was 12 years old, so I guess it was its time. I shut the water off right away and called a plumber. They quoted me $1,800 for a new 50 gallon unit installed. Ended up paying $2,100 after tax because they found some rust on the pipe connections. Has anyone else had a sudden water heater failure in the middle of winter? How did you handle it?

Yeah, that's rough. Winter failures are the worst for sure.

Had a neighbor who swore by winterizing everything, thought I was fine letting things ride until something actually broke. Last January a pipe burst in my basement, water everywhere, now I'm that guy telling everyone to check their insulation before the first freeze. Changed my whole view on being proactive instead of waiting for problems.

Damn that sucks! Did the plumber give you a heads up about the rust before he started?
