Siding on a 1970s Edmonton bungalow: vinyl or fiber cement?

I went back and forth for weeks on whether to redo my 1978 bungalow in Mill Woods with vinyl or fiber cement. Vinyl came in around $11,000, hardie board was closer to $19,000, and I almost went cheap because who wants to spend 8 grand more on walls? Ended up picking fiber cement after a neighbor on my street showed me his vinyl that was already cracking and fading after six Alberta winters. It's been three years now and mine still looks basically new, while his has chalky white streaks running down the south side. Anyone here done the opposite and regretted going with the pricier option, or is this just how it goes?
