Picked laminate over engineered hardwood for my basement and now I'm second-guessing every cold snap

I went with the cheaper option to save about $1,200 on a 500 square foot install, and after two Calgary winters I'm wondering if the extra cost for hardwood would have held up better against the slab temperature swings.

Honestly, I'm gonna play full devil's advocate here and say you probably made the right call. Engineered hardwood in a basement with a slab is just asking for trouble - that stuff can cup or buckle if there's even a hint of moisture coming up through the concrete. I've seen guys spend big on hardwood only to have it warp after one spring thaw, while laminate just sits there and takes the cold without caring. Plus, that $1200 you saved could cover a good quality underlayment and a thick rug for the cold spots, which is way more practical than pretty wood that might not survive.

That bit about "after one spring thaw" really hits home. @the_robin, you're right about that cycle being brutal on wood down there. One thing nobody brings up is how laminate reflects light better than engineered hardwood in a basement with small windows. That extra brightness can make a windowless rec room feel way bigger than it actually is.
