Just realized I was cleaning my bathroom grout completely wrong for 3 years
I always thought scrubbing grout with bleach and a stiff brush was the only way to go. Then last month I was at a client's house in Edmonton and she saw me going at it and just laughed. She told me to try a steam cleaner instead, said it lifts the dirt without damaging the sealant. I was skeptical, but I borrowed her little handheld one and honestly the grout came out looking brand new in half the time. Now I'm wondering if I've been wrecking my own grout at home for years with all that scrubbing. The weird thing is my clients never complained, so maybe the bleach method is fine for some people? Has anyone else had a moment where a client or friend showed you a house cleaning trick that made you feel totally clueless about how you'd been doing it all along?

Wait, wait wait. Three years of scrubbing grout wrong? That's like finding out you've been using a microwave to toast bread. I had the exact same thing happen to me but with granite countertops. I was using that spray-on cleaner with the bleach in it for years before a friend who's a contractor told me I was basically eating away the sealant. It made me feel so dumb, like I'd been paying for fancy counters and then slowly destroying them with every single cleaning. Your Edmonton client is a lifesaver, honestly, because steam cleaners are a game changer and most people don't even know they exist for grout. That feeling of "wait, I could have been doing this simpler and faster the whole time?" is the worst.

Is there something about getting older where you just keep finding out you've been doing simple stuff the hard way your whole life? It's like I spent 30 years thinking you had to boil pasta in a giant pot of water, then someone told me you can just start it in cold water and save a step. The grout thing is such a good example because we all get stuck in this "this is just how you clean it" mindset, and then one random person comes along and blows your whole system up. I bet half the stuff we do around the house has a smarter, easier version that we just haven't run into yet.
