Finally switched from a tank to a tankless water heater after a cold shower streak

I kept going back and forth for 6 months whether to stick with my old 40 gallon tank or go tankless. Then I had 3 mornings in a row last February where the hot water ran out before I finished my shower. That did it for me. I put in a Rinnai unit and now I never worry about timing my showers with the dishwasher anymore. Has anyone else here made the switch in an older Calgary bungalow?

Oh man, you're spot on. I did the same thing with my 1960s house and the install cost me way more than I planned, plus I was constantly fighting with the temperature when my wife ran the washing machine.

Man, I gotta disagree on this one. I tried a tankless in my 1950s Calgary house and it was honestly more trouble than it was worth. The install was a nightmare with all the venting and gas line upgrades needed in an older place, plus the water temp would fluctuate like crazy if someone flushed a toilet or started the washing machine. My buddy with a newer house loves his Rinnai, but for older bungalows with hard Calgary water, you're looking at yearly descaling and potential short lifespan. I switched back to a 50 gallon tank after two years and haven't had a cold shower since, even with two teenagers taking 20 minute showers back to back.
