Watched an old timer in Amarillo splice a wire with a lighter and a piece of heat shrink from his pocket

Back in 2009 I was on a 40 zone install in Amarillo and my butt connectors ran out with two doors left, and this guy just twisted the wires, slid on a scrap of heat shrink, and warmed it with his lighter. I still carry a few inches of heat shrink in my shirt pocket on every job because of that day. Anybody else pick up a habit from a guy on site that stuck with you for years?
