That service call in Bakersfield where the keypad showed 99 zones
Got dispatched to a strip mall at 2pm last Tuesday, customer said their alarm was going crazy. Walked in and the keypad was scrolling through zone 01 through 99 on a panel that only supports 8 zones. Turned out a rat had chewed through the main wiring harness behind the drywall and shorted every loop. Took me 3 hours to trace it and re-run the cable, but I learned to check for rodent damage first when the numbers don't add up. Has anyone else seen weird phantom zones like that, or was this just my lucky day?
Found the same thing on a ranch install a few years back. Customer said every zone was tripping at once, turned out to be a gopher that chewed through the main bundle near the fence line. Now I always sniff around for chew marks before I even open my multimeter, saves a ton of headache.
