Showerthought: seeing a panel dangling off the wall at a Wichita Best Western changed how I mount everything
Walked into a Best Western in Wichita last month on a service call and the whole keypad was hanging by its wires from drywall anchors that had pulled clean out. The installer had used the little plastic screws that come in the box on straight drywall with nothing behind it, and the thing had been swinging there for who knows how long. Since then I've been debating with the crew whether anchors are ever okay on a retrofit or if you should always cut in a wood block or a box. Half the guys say anchors are fine if you pick the right ones and hit a stud edge, the other half say never trust them on a wall you didn't hang. What's your rule, anchors or always back it with wood?
