Saw a weird sensor placement at a new apartment complex in Austin

I was checking out a friend's place at the new 'Riverwalk Lofts' and noticed they put a motion sensor right above a heating vent. The installer must have been in a rush because the warm air flow is going to cause false trips for sure. Has anyone else run into this kind of thing on a big new build?

Feel your pain, that's just lazy work.

That bit about the "surprise alarm" feature got me thinking. I honestly used to think engineers had it all figured out, like every wire and sensor placement was some master plan. But then I started paying attention to stuff around my own house and saw how they cram thermostats right over vents or in direct sunlight. It really changed my mind. You start noticing these small oversights that just snowball into constant false alarms or efficiency problems. Now I assume half the design is just guessing until the customer complains.

That's the kind of genius planning that adds a "surprise alarm" feature to your HVAC system. They probably thought the warm air would help the sensor feel cozy and work better. I bet the building's security logs are just pages of "ghost" events every time the heat kicks on.
