Old school panel gave me a headache for a full Saturday
Last weekend I got called out to swap a 20 year old keypad in a house over in Maplewood. The panel was fine, but the new keypad kept throwing a trouble code that made no sense. I spent close to six hours checking wiring, redoing terminations, and even swapped the keypad twice before I decided to look at the panel firmware revision. Turns out the board needed a chip update from 2004, and nobody had ever done it. Has anyone else fought a legacy system that just needed a quiet software fix instead of new hardware?

Six hours for a chip update nobody thought to check, that's the classic story of assuming the obvious fix is the right one. We do it with cars, phones, even relationships, we replace the part we can see instead of asking what's changed underneath. Sometimes the quietest piece of software is the loudest lesson about not skipping the basics.
