Can we talk about the $60 magnetic fish tape that saved my panel job?
I picked up a magnetic fish tape for about $60 at a supply house in Reno after a rough week. Had a panel swap in an old house with a finished wall and no clean path, and I was ready to start cutting drywall. The magnet grabbed the chain through the wall in under two minutes and I never touched the Sheetrock. That one tool paid for itself on a single job, no joke. Before that I was always using coat hangers and praying. Has anyone found a better way to fish behind a finished wall without cutting into it?
Curious how the magnet actually grabs the chain once it's inside the wall, does the tape pull it through from the panel side or do you drop the chain down from the top? Getting the chain to the right spot seems like the hard part, not the fishing itself. What's your trick for keeping the chain from snagging on insulation or a stud?
