Third guy this month torqued his oil filter housing bolts by feel and cracked it
I've been doing oil changes on a shop's rental fleet at the Aurora field for about five years now, and I keep finding oil filter housings cracked at the same two bolt ears. Last Tuesday a 172 came in with a fresh crack and the guy swore he snugged it "just past hand tight." Problem is the spec on that housing is 18 to 20 inch pounds, and nobody is grabbing a small inch pound wrench for it, so they lean on a 3/8 ratchet and it's done. I keep a cheap 1/4 drive torque wrench in my box just for these and it hasn't let me down yet. Anybody else seeing this on the little continentals, or is it just the renters around here?
