Overheard a lead say torque wrenches are just suggestions, had to walk away
Was in the hangar last Tuesday and one of the older leads was joking around with a new guy, said something like 'torque wrenches are just suggestions if you know the feel.' I know he was half kidding, but it got me thinking about how much trust we put in calibrated tools versus experience. I've seen a stripped bolt from someone guessing once, and it cost us a whole afternoon plus a replacement part. Do you guys ever second-guess a torque reading when it doesn't match what you feel, or do you always stop and re-check? I'm starting to wonder if there's an unspoken rule about when to trust the tool over the hand.

Gotta flip it the other way, what about the torque wrench that's never been dropped but sits in a dusty toolbox for years? That calibration cert means nothing if the intern borrowed it and torqued a rusty bolt to spec, now the threads are buggered anyway. Half the game is knowing when the tool is lying to you because the metal is telling you something else.
