My shop went from torque wrenches to click-type torque wrenches and it fixed our loose fasteners problem
Last month at our hangar in Wichita we had three separate reports of loose bolts on a Cessna 172 landing gear after annuals. I started logging which tech did each job and what tool they used. Turns out the old beam-style wrenches we had were getting dropped and going out of spec way more often than anyone thought. We switched to click-type wrenches and got them calibrated every 90 days, and we haven't had a single loose fastener report in six weeks. Has anyone else seen beam wrenches fail that quiet?

Did you ever check if the techs were actually hearing the beam wrench click or just feeling for the bend? A buddy of mine ran a small repair shop over in Salina and had the same thing happen with his guys. He swore by those old beam wrenches for years until he sent a batch out for cal and half of them were reading way off after getting knocked around in toolboxes. What got him was that the beam style doesnt give you that solid click, so on a busy day a guy torques it by feel and thinks hes good when hes really under. He switched to click types too and made everybody zero them out after each use, and his comeback rate dropped off a cliff. The quiet part is the scary part with beams, you cant tell its bad just by looking at it.
