Appreciation post: A chat with an old pilot made me see my job in a new light

I was doing a walkaround on a Cessna 172 last week, and the owner, a guy who's been flying for like 40 years, was watching me. He pointed at the aileron hinge I was checking and said, 'You know, I never worry when I see a mechanic take their time like that.' He told me a story about a flight where a loose bolt he missed almost caused real trouble. It hit different because it wasn't about the specs for once, it was about the person in the seat trusting my eyes. Anyone else have a moment where a pilot's story changed how you approach a routine check?

Yeah, had a captain tell me a similar thing once. Makes you slow down and really look, doesn't it?

Totally get what you mean, spencer664. My old flight instructor would make me call out every single power line and water tower during pre-flight, even the ones miles away. It felt silly at first, but now I can't not see them. Makes you realize how much you usually miss, right?

You know what's wild, that whole "see and avoid" thing from training actually rewires your brain for driving too. I live near a small airport and I swear half the locals here still scan for planes before merging onto the highway even years after moving away from the flight path.
