Wrote off frozen fries in the air fryer for two years, one cold water soak changed that
I always figured frozen fries were hopeless in the air fryer since mine kept coming out pale and sad while the insides stayed ice cold. Last Tuesday my neighbor Deb told me to soak them in cold water for 15 minutes and pat them totally dry before they hit the basket at 380 for about 14 minutes. I gave it one shot in my Brooklyn kitchen and the difference was wild, crispy outside, fluffy middle, no sogginess at all. Turns out the ice glaze on frozen fries just steams everything instead of browning it. Has anyone tried this with sweet potato fries or does the sugar burn them too fast?
