My air fryer decided to smoke out my kitchen last Tuesday
I was trying to make frozen fries in my old model and it started billowing white smoke halfway through. I had to unplug it and open all the windows in my apartment. Anyone have a good method for cleaning the heating element to stop this?

That smoky air fryer moment feels like a modern kitchen rite of passage. My old toaster oven did the same thing with fallen breadcrumbs last month. It seems like every appliance now has a hidden grease trap or filter we're supposed to magically know about. The manual for my coffee maker had a full page on decalcifying that I found only after it started gurgling. A good scrub of the element with a soft brush once it's cold usually does the trick, but the real fix is cleaning it more often than you think you need to.

Totally get that "modern kitchen rite of passage" feeling. My Cosori did the same thing with bacon grease. I let it cool, took the basket out, and used a damp cloth to wipe the heating coil up top. Got a bunch of black gunk off. Now I wipe it down after anything greasy. No more smoke shows.

My old Ninja did that until I started cleaning it weekly, like iris_ellis said about hidden grease traps.
