Air fryer nearly caught fire while making bacon

I tried making bacon in my air fryer last night at my buddy's place in Austin. Set it to 400 degrees for 8 minutes like some recipe said, and by minute 5 the thing was smoking heavy with grease splattered all over the heating coil. I had to pull the basket fast and dump it outside before it got worse. Has anyone else had their air fryer smoke like crazy with fatty meats?

400 degrees for 8 minutes" is way too hot and too long for bacon. A buddy of mine in Dallas tried that exact same thing last month and his air fryer started shooting little flames out the back. He had to unplug it real quick and toss the whole basket in the sink. He said it smelled like burnt plastic for two days. Now he only does bacon at 350 for like 5 minutes and flips it halfway through.

Man that sounds exactly like what happened to my friend Dave last month. He got that same "400 for 8 minutes" advice from some blog and his air fryer started pouring out smoke so thick he had to open every window in his apartment. The grease basically pooled under the basket and caught fire when it hit the coil. He said the smoke alarm went off for a solid 10 minutes. He learned the hard way you gotta drain the bacon halfway and never go above 350. He does 5 minutes on one side, flips it, then another 3 to 4 minutes and it comes out perfect without any drama.

Yeah man, I've been there. It's the grease pool that gets you. I always cook bacon at 350 max and dump the grease halfway through. Your mileage may vary but those high temp recipes are a trap with fatty stuff.
