Update: The guy who sold me my first laptop said AI would just be Clippy 2.0, that was 2 years ago and I just used it to fix my washing machine
When I bought a used ThinkPad off a guy in Reno back in 2022 he swore up and down that all this AI stuff was a fad and would end up like that paperclip assistant from the 90s. I believed him for a while, mostly because he seemed like he knew computers and I sure didn't. Fast forward to last month, my washer started throwing an error code and the manual was long gone, so out of ideas I typed the code into one of the chat bots. It walked me through checking the drain filter step by step and even asked which noises it was making before it told me what to unscrew. Twenty minutes later the thing was running again and I didn't pay a repair guy $150. So yeah, not exactly Clippy. Anyone else get talked out of a new tool by somebody who sounded sure of themselves?
A chatbot fixing your washer doesn't prove AI is useful, it just proves you got lucky the one time you tried it, and you probably would've found the same drain filter video on YouTube in five minutes anyway. The guy in Reno was wrong about Clippy but he wasn't wrong that people hype these tools way past what they actually do.
