Picked a local AI model over a cloud one for my home setup and the $0 bill sold me
Two months ago I had to choose between paying $20 a month for a cloud AI plan or running an open model on the old gaming PC in my closet. I went local, and after about 6 hours of setup I had it writing my emails and sorting files just fine. My power bill went up maybe $4 a month and nothing I type ever leaves my apartment. The catch is it's slower and gets stuff wrong more often than the big cloud ones. Has anyone else gone local and actually stuck with it, or did you crawl back to the cloud after a few weeks?
Six hours of setup and a machine that gets things wrong more often is not the win you think it is. Your time has a price too, and if you spent six hours getting it running plus however long you waste fixing its mistakes, that $20 cloud plan starts looking cheap. Power bill going up $4 a month means you didn't escape the cost, you just moved it around and added slower answers on top. The big cloud models will keep getting better while your closet PC stays exactly as fast as it is today, so the gap only grows from here. Give it a few more weeks before you call it a keeper, because most people quietly switch back once the novelty wears off.
