Overheard a dev say GPT-4o is just a toy, not a tool

Was sitting in a coffee shop near downtown Austin last Tuesday and caught two engineers arguing about AI. One guy said he uses Claude for actual coding work because GPT-4o hallucinates API calls too much for production stuff. Got me thinking - are we overhyping these models for real tasks when they still can't reliably handle a simple database query?

Overheard a dev say GPT-4o is just a toy" honestly that's kind of how I feel about a lot of tech these days, folks get hyped on the shiny new thing but it's like buying a fancy new truck that looks great in the driveway but can't haul a load of mulch without overheating.

Right, but what counts as "not a toy" then? Because I keep hearing people say stuff like this but nobody ever bothers to define what actually makes something useful to them. Is it about making money, or doing something faster, or just looking impressive to your buddies? Seems like people throw the word "toy" at anything they don't personally need for their own narrow job, and that's not really a fair way to judge a tool.
