My friend in Austin said AI art is just 'fancy collage' and it made me think.
We were arguing over coffee last Tuesday when he pointed at a generated image and said, 'It's not creating, it's just shuffling pixels it already ate,' and I've been trying to find a good counter-argument since then, so has anyone else had to defend the creative side of generative models to a skeptic?

My buddy Mark got the same line from his sister, so he made an AI image of her cat as a Roman senator. She framed it.

Your friend in Austin has a point though. If you look at how the models are trained, they are basically learning to remix patterns from millions of existing images. That cat senator story from daniel_king86 is funny, but it's still just a clever mix of 'cat' and 'Roman statue' data. Where's the real intent or struggle in that? It feels more like advanced pattern matching than someone starting with a blank page.
