I thought AI upscaling was just a fancy filter until I ran my old family photos through it last month
My grandma handed me a shoebox of photos from the 70s and most of them were badly faded and blurry. I scanned about 40 of them, half at low res just to test things, and ran them through an upscaler. The low-res scans came back looking almost sharp, edges on faces and text on the backs of photos were readable again. It took maybe 20 minutes for all 40, versus the 3 weekends I once spent trying to fix two photos by hand in an editor. The part that convinced me was a cracked black-and-white shot of my grandpa at a car lot in Detroit, the license plate on a truck behind him went from a smear to something you could actually read. Now I'm wondering what else is hiding in old scans. Has anyone tried this on old camcorder footage, and does the motion turn into mush or does it hold up?
