Spent 3 weeks blaming the model when the real fix was trimming my system prompt down to 4 tight examples, and now I'm curious if anyone else keeps a junk drawer of old prompts just to see how bad they were.
I kept a folder called prompts_graveyard for like a year. Opened it last month and one of them had a 400 word intro explaining what a helpful assistant should be, plus 9 examples where 7 were basically the same question reworded. My current one is like 80 words and works better. It's wild how much we trick ourselves into thinking more setup equals more control. Cutting stuff is way harder than adding it though, I still catch myself wanting to pile on just one more example when something breaks.
