My sister swore her neuroscience blog said 45 minutes hits deep sleep perfectly, so I tried that for two weeks every day after lunch in Austin. Woke up groggy and cranky each time, missed a work call on day 5, and felt worse than a 10 minute couch doze. Is there any science out there that actually backs shorter naps, or do we all just find our own weird sweet spot?
Man, that 45 minute thing is everywhere and I think it's because people only talk about the sleep cycle length and skip the part where you have to actually fall asleep at the right time to land at the end of it. If you lie down and take 15 minutes to drift off, you wake up right in the middle of deep sleep and feel like garbage, which sounds exactly like your two weeks. The 10 to 20 minute nap works better for most people because you never get into deep sleep at all, so there's nothing to drag yourself out of.
