My 20 minute sleep cap ruined naps until my wife pointed out the obvious
I used to set my alarm for exactly 20 minutes every single day because that's what all the articles say. But I kept waking up groggy and cranky, like way worse than before I napped. My wife finally said 'you fall asleep in like 2 minutes, so you're hitting deep sleep right as the alarm goes off.' She made me add 10 extra minutes so I finish a full cycle and wake up between stages. Now I do 30 minutes flat and it's night and day. Anyone else mess with their nap length based on how fast they actually drop off? What's your sweet spot?

Hold on, that logic kinda falls apart for me. You're basically saying the only reason you were tired was the alarm timing, but what if your body just doesn't NEED a nap that long? Adding ten minutes just because you fall asleep fast doesn't fix the real problem, it just masks it.
Sleep cycles aren't a perfect science and everyone's brain is different. Maybe you were groggy because 20 minutes is just a bad length for YOUR body, not because you hit deep sleep too fast. Some people nap for 15 minutes and feel great, others need 45, and adding time just to hit a "full cycle" feels like overthinking a simple thing.
Honestly, most of those articles are just guesses and your wife's theory could be pure coincidence. You changed two things at once, the length AND your own expectations, so how do you know which one actually worked? Keep testing it for a few weeks before you act like you cracked the code.
