Why does everyone love Doug? I gave it 12 episodes and regret the time

I keep seeing Doug listed as a top 90s cartoon everywhere I look, so last month I sat down and watched a full season block on streaming. Twelve episodes in and I had to stop. The show just meanders, Doug's voice is this constant mumble, and the whole Patti Mayonnaise crush thing got old by episode 3. I get that it was quirky and different from the action cartoons, but the jokes barely land and the daydream sequences feel like filler. People my age get all nostalgic and I feel like I'm missing a secret handshake or something. Are we sure it's not just remembered fondly because nothing else was on Nickelodeon at that hour? Has anyone else rewatched it as an adult and found it totally flat, or am I the only one who wasted that many evenings?
