VHS tape got eaten 20 minutes before my sister's birthday party
Back in 1998 I was in charge of entertainment for my little sister's party and popped in her favorite VHS tape, the one with all the Disney sing-alongs. The player made that awful crunching sound and spit out a tangled mess of tape, and 12 kids were arriving in 20 minutes. I grabbed a screwdriver, took the case apart, and carefully pulled out the twisted ribbon, then used a pencil to wind it back into the cassette. It played with a little warble at the splice point but saved the whole afternoon, and I still can't believe the tape survived. Has anyone else tried the pencil trick on a mangled tape, or did I just get lucky?
