Revisiting Gargoyles as an adult hit way different than I expected

I was all about that show as a kid in the 90s, thought it was just another monster cartoon, but after rewatching it last month I realized it had legit Shakespearean plots and dark themes they snuck past us. Has anyone else gone back to a childhood favorite and seen a whole new layer you completely missed back then?

Did you catch how Xanatos basically played everyone like a chess board the whole time, or did that one blow your mind later too? Because when I rewatched it as an adult, I realized that guy was always ten steps ahead and the heroes were just chasing his tail the whole series. There's an episode where he literally says his plans are like a game and it went right over my head as a kid. What other twists did you notice the second time around?
