Rant: I paid $45 for a VHS of Salute Your Shorts at a flea market in Tampa and it was a re-recorded copy

So I finally found a seller at the flea market in Tampa who had a whole bin of old Nick tapes, and he wanted $45 for one labeled Salute Your Shorts. I was so pumped I did not even ask to test it, just handed over the cash like a dummy. Got home, popped it in, and about 30 seconds in I could see a faint channel number in the corner and the runtime was all wrong, plus someone had taped a Home Improvement episode right over the second half. The label was written in ballpoint pen, which should have been my first clue, and the seller was long gone by the time I drove back the next weekend. Anyone else get burned on tapes at flea markets, and is there a trick to checking them before you pay?
