My older cousin told me to skip 'Hey Arnold' because it was boring

Honestly, she said the football-shaped head was weird and the stories were slow. I finally watched an episode at my friend's house in 1998, the one where Arnold gets his grandpa's journal. Ngl, I was hooked by the city vibe and the real feelings. Anyone else get bad TV advice that made you miss a show at first?

Ugh, worst advice ever. My friend said "Freaks and Geeks" was just some dumb high school show. Totally wrote it off. Caught a rerun years later, the episode where Sam tries to buy a fake ID. It hit so hard. That show got the awkwardness perfect. Still mad I missed it when it first aired.

Did you ever read that oral history of the show that came out a few years back? I stumbled on it online and it explained why the show was so special. Turns out the writers really pulled from their own high school experiences, which is why every character felt so real even when they were being ridiculous. That fake ID episode is a perfect example - I remember cringing so hard because I knew exactly that feeling of wanting to be older than you are. The show only got one season but it left a mark because it treated teenagers like actual people, not just stereotypes.
