My cousin argued that 'Hey Arnold!' had a deeper message than 'Rugrats'
We were talking about old shows at a family BBQ in Phoenix last weekend. He said Arnold's city life taught real lessons, while the babies were just silly. Which cartoon actually had more to say to kids back then?

Look at cartoons from the 90s with adult eyes. Both shows were just trying to sell commercials and keep kids quiet. Your cousin is reading way too much into it.

Maybe on the surface, but some of those writers snuck in real ideas. Look at "Hey Arnold" dealing with homelessness with Mr. Hyunh, or "Rugrats" showing how kids process complex stuff like a new sibling. They were selling toys, sure, but the good ones did more than just keep us quiet. They gave us things to actually think about.
