I finally bought the complete DVD set of Are You Afraid of the Dark?
Found it on eBay for $45 and figured it was worth the nostalgia trip. Man, that show still holds up way better than I expected. The intro music alone gave me chills again. But I blew through all 5 seasons in two weeks and now I'm stuck watching the 90s commercials that came on between episodes. Anyone else rewatch an old show and realize it was actually kind of creepy for kids?

You ever notice how the things that scared us as kids usually had the most lasting impact? I watched that show again last year and realized it wasn't just the monsters or the jump scares, it was the way they left things unresolved sometimes (like that episode with the pool monster). It's funny how we absorb that stuff differently when we're older, you know? Same thing happened to me with the old Goosebumps books - they felt so intense back then, but now I see they were just tapping into really basic fears that never really go away.

Well, isn't that the truth. I've been thinking about that myself lately, actually. What gets me is how those unresolved endings from shows like that almost feel more real now as an adult. Kids want neat answers, but adults know life doesn't give you those. The pool monster episode you mentioned, the way it just cuts off with that eerie music, that stuck with me for years. I reckon our younger selves were picking up on something we couldn't name yet, like the idea that some fears just hang around without any tidy explanation.
