Debate: Was Recess or Hey Arnold the better 90s school cartoon?

Did you guys catch that podcast where they broke down the school settings in both shows? I think Hey Arnold definitely felt more real with the whole gritty city vibe. Recess had that weirdly perfect playground setup, but Arnold and his friends dealt with stuff like actual bullying and family problems. Recess was funnier in a goofy way, but Hey Arnold hit harder emotionally. The school in Arnold actually looked like a real building, not some giant cartoon castle. I remember reading somewhere that the creators of Hey Arnold based P.S. 118 on a real elementary school in Brooklyn, which is pretty cool.

That real school detail is one of my favorite things about Hey Arnold actually. P.S. 118 felt so lived in with the broken tiles and the weird lunch smells and the way the hallways looked exactly like the ones I remember from elementary school. Recess always had that perfect sparkly playground where everyone got along eventually and the worst problem was a ball getting stuck on the roof. But Arnold's school had real weight to it because you could feel how cramped and noisy and sometimes sad it was, just like actual city schools. The creators built that world from real memories and you can totally tell.
