Appreciation post: The clear winner between 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?' and 'Goosebumps'

My friends and I did a marathon of both shows last Halloween, and 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?' was just better. The stories felt more real and the scares stuck with you longer, like the one about the ghost in the swimming pool. Which show gave you more nightmares as a kid?

The pool ghost episode was a total classic. Did you find the scares in AYAOTD more effective because the kids felt like real people you knew? Goosebumps always felt a bit more silly to me.

Honestly I used to think Goosebumps was scarier when I was a kid. But rewatching them now, you're totally right. The realness of the kids in AYAOTD makes the scary stuff hit way harder.

Midnight Society and that opening scene with the fire... yeah, that whole vibe just made the stories feel more serious. I used to think Goosebumps was the gold standard for kid horror but watching them back to back, the acting in AYAOTD is just way more grounded. Like the pool ghost episode where the kid sees the drowned girl at the bottom of the deep end, that shot stayed with me for weeks because it felt like something that could actually happen at a public pool near my house. The CGI in Goosebumps always pulled me out of it a bit, but AYAOTD's practical effects and real kid emotions made the scares land so much harder.
