Appreciation post: A friend's comment made me rewatch 'Hey Arnold!' differently

A buddy told me I was missing the point by just laughing at Helga's insults. He said the show's real strength was how it handled tough topics, like Arnold's missing parents, with a quiet respect for its young audience. I rewatched the 'Parents Day' episode with that in mind, and it hit so much harder. Has anyone else had a show change for them after a second look?

Wait, his parents were MISSING? I always thought they were just... not around, like on a long trip. That completely changes the whole show for me.

Yeah, that "missing" detail hits different. I always just assumed they were working overseas or something, but knowing they vanished makes all those quiet moments in his house feel way heavier. It explains why he's so closed off at the start.

My buddy rewatched it after his kid was born and said the episode where Arnold talks to his grandpa about his parents made him tear up for the first time. He never got why that scene was so quiet before.
